CSDS-Lokniti Mood of the Nation poll applies balm on BJP’s wounded pride

New Delhi, May 25, 2018 : The BJP hurt its pride in Karnataka where the party finished as the single-largest one but was forced to sit in Opposition after a frustrating attempt at government formation. The Congress-JD(S) rubbed salt in the wound today with the Kumaraswamy government proving majority without division of votes. But there is something positive for the BJP.

 

The CSDS-Lokniti Mood of the Nation poll today showed that the BJP is still the most favoured choice in most of the big states of the country. The survey conducted on the eve of the completion of four years of the Narendra Modi government will definitely serve as a morale booster for the BJP and its alliance partners within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

According to the Mood of the Nation polls, the NDA’s vote share in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra and Gujarat is well above its challenger, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), which has an upper hand in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh - the two states going to the polls later this year.

In Uttar Pradesh, NDA’s vote share is showing a dip from 43 per cent to 35 per cent but it is much better placed than the UPA which is likely to get 12 per cent vote in the state if elections were held today. UPA’s vote share in UP in 2014 was only 8 per cent.

Others’ vote share may be a worry for the BJP in Uttar Pradesh. Others’ vote share shows improvement from 49 per cent to 53 per cent.


MOOD OF THE NATION

Unlike Uttar Pradesh, the NDA strengthens its vote share in Bihar. Even UPA gains in terms of vote share in Bihar, but NDA seems to be in control with 60 per cent of voters favouring the coalition.

In Gujarat, the NDA loses some votes but is still 12 per cent ahead of the UPA despite latter’s nine per cent jump in vote share over 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

In Maharashtra, the NDA is losing three per cent vote share but is still eight per cent ahead of the UPA, which has gained five per cent more votes.

Madhya Pradesh is one of the states, where UPA is in the lead. Against NDA’s 40 per cent vote share, if elections are held today, the UPA would pocket 50 per cent of votes.

Rajasthan is another state where the UPA is gaining immensely to go past the NDA.
