Blast at Dinanagar police station, 8 live grenades found in Gurdaspur

Mangalore Today News Network

New Delhi, July 28, 2015: The 11-hour-long fierce gunbattle between terrorists and the Indian security forces at Gurdaspur in Punjab ended at 5 pm on Monday, leaving seven dead.

Condemning Monday’s terror attack in Dinanagar town, the Communist Party of India-Marxist says: "This attack by a three-member squad, reportedly coming from across the border in Pakistan, is a matter of serious concern. It is to be investigated how such a squad could cross the border which is fenced and patrolled."

Commenting on Gurdaspur attack, former Union Minister SM Krishna tells news agency ANI: "I think PM Modi has a challenge, but I think he will be able to tackle it."

A CCTV footage has come into light, showing three terrorists minutes before they attacked Dinanagar police station on Monday.

Former Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh describes terror attack in Gurdaspur as `an act of cowardice`. Calling Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif as a `superfluous character`, Singh said that nothing will be achieved by talking to him. “Let Pakistan not assume that India is Myanmar, that we will take any thing they throw at us,” said Singh.

According to news agency ANI, 8 live grenades have been recovered from the site of Gurdaspur attack. The Punjab Police Bomb Squad has defused one live grenade.

Loud blast heard at Dinanagar police station in Gurdaspur minutes after bomb disposal squad enters, reports the Hindustan Times.

Security has been beefed up in Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts in Jammu and Kashmir following the terror attack in neighbouring Punjab, says police. Village headmen have been asked to report to the police if unknown or suspicious individuals are seen in their areas. Security for the pilgrims heading for Mata Vaishno Devi shrine and Amarnath Yatra has been strengthened.

While the limelight of the 11-hour long intense gunbattle with terrorists has been hogged by the SWAT and special units of the Punjab Police in Monday’s terror attack on Dinanagar town in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district, it was the pro-active role played by unsung heroes like Satpal, Darshan Kumar and Nanak Chand who saved scores of lives from the mayhem planned by the terrorists. The death toll in the terror attack could have been many more than the figure of seven had these three men and their associates not shown alertness and courage.
