Black money debate: Fulfil promise or apologise, says Congress to Modi

Mangalore Today News Network

New Delhi, Nov 26, 2014: The NDA government had to finally relent to the opposition’s continued attack on black money by allowing the debate on the issue in both houses of Parliament on Wednesday.

black-money.jSpeaking first in both Houses, the Congress asked why the government has not revealed names of those who had deposited black money in foreign banks. "The government said there were 50 names, didn’t reveal them. The NDA questions our integrity, what about theirs?" Mallikarjun Kharge said in Lok Sabha. "They made a mountain of a molehill. The government must stop big talk," he said.

In Rajya Sabha, former Union minister Anand Sharma of the Congress said, "Modi had said that Rs.15 lakh would be deposited in the account of every person after black money is recovered. Fulfil your promise or tell the people of India that we sold false dreams and we apologise and we will try our best."

"The PM said that he knew about black money, quantified it...and now he says he does not know the amount. What is the truth?" Sharma said, adding, "Today, exactly six months after PM Modi assumed office, it is a 360-degree turn on black money."

Meanwhile, a notice by the Congress to bring an adjournment motion in Lok Sabha on the issue of black money was rejected by Speaker Sumitra Mahajan.

Since Tuesday, a united opposition has attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi of not doing enough on his promise of bringing back crores stashed by Indians abroad within 100 days of coming to power. On the first working day of the Winter session of Parliament, the opposition had disrupted Lok Sabha proceedings with Trinamool Congress MPs carrying black umbrellas with "Bring back black money" written on them. The Congress, RJD, Samajwadi Party and AAP also joined the TMC members.

"We had promised to take concrete steps to bring back black money. We have taken steps. That everyone knows. What did the Congress do to bring back black money?" Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said on Tuesday.

The Winter session of Parliament will continue till December 23 and will have 22 sittings. The government has detailed 37 bills, including the high-profile Insurance Bill and the Goods and Service Tax Bill.
