Bihar: Communal clash erupts in Bhagalpur over Vikram Samvat procession, 18 injured

New Delhi, Mar 19, 2018 : At least 18 people including six policemen were injured after clashes broke out between two communities in Bihar’s Bhagalpur during the Vikram Samvat procession. The procession was organised by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Bajrang Dal workers and was led by Arijit Choubey, son of Union minister Ashwini Choubey. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Bhagalpur, Manoj Kumar said that the incident took place in the Nathnagar police station area of the district.

The altercation occurred when one group objected to songs being played by the procession at the Medinagar Chowk which ultimately led to a tussle between the locals and the people participating in the procession. (Also Read:

SSP Manoj Kumar said that exchange of firing took place, shops and vehicles were set ablaze and shoes were hurled. He said that on the eve of new ‘Vikram Samvat’ that is the New Year; a procession began from the Budhanath temple and reached Nathnagar in the district.

Apart from firing gunshots, stones were also pelted from both the sides. This resulted in several shops getting vandalized and one bike being damaged. Reportedly, at least 50 rounds were fired between the two communities.

The District Magistrate (DM) and the SSP reached on the spot after getting the information about the violence. All call for truce fell on deaf ears until police officials arrived on the spot.

As of now, police force from 20 stations is camping in Bhagalpur to maintain peace. Strict action would be taken once the culprits behind the incident are identified said the senior police authorities.
