Mangalore Today News Network

Bengaluru, August 1, 2015: The number of people arrested in connection with the kidney racket in Bengaluru has reached 15 so far with the police registering 12 independent cases. The racket came to the fore last month after a woman, who donated her kidney, reported to the police that she was cheated by a middleman.

arrest 0The victims of the racket are from Bengaluru and nearby towns of Ramanagara and Magadi. The Transplantation of Human Organs Act, prohibits a kidney patient from receiving organs from donors, who are unrelated. The kingpin of the racket created fake documents to show that the kidney donors and recipients were related. The kingpin and the middlemen promised Rs 10 lakh to each of the donor. However, when they failed to pay the sum assured to the donors, the donors approached the police seeking their intervention unaware of the fact that they are not entitled to donate their kidneys.

Some of the arrested are working in renowned private hospitals in Bengaluru and Mysuru and the police are likely to initiate action against the management as well. It is alleged that staff of the hospitals helped identify kidney recipients and connected them to the middlemen. The police expect to arrest more number of people, as victims are approaching the police one by one.
