Bengaluru, April 23, 2018 (ET): BJP today released its fourth list of candidates for the May 12 Karnataka Assembly polls leaving out the son of chief ministerial face BS Yeddyurappa but including another family member of tainted mining baron G Janardhan Reddy.

The list of seven seats did not include Varuna - where Yeddyurappa’s son BY Vijayendra was expected to take on Siddaramaiah’s son Yathindra - but the former chief minister announced that his son will not be contesting.

BJP 4th list

"Vijayendra is not filing nomination today, a common man (party worker) will be fielded and he will be filing the nomination," Yeddyurappa said at a party event in Mysuru leading to protests by his supporters.

Sources in BJP said this may have been done at the behest of RSS that frowns over dynasty politics, but Congress leaders claimed Vijayendra had withdrawn as his party and his father realised they would lose in Varuna, a constituency vacated by Siddaramaiah and dominated by his Kuruba community.

While speculation mounted that the party may have clipped Yeddyurappa’s wings, BJP leaders on Twitter, including national general secretary P Muralidhar Rao, claimed the Lingayat strongman himself asked his son not to contest.

With just a day to go for the last day of filing nominations BJP has withheld the names for Badami - where Siddaramaiah is contesting - Varuna, Sakleshpur and Sidlaghatta while 220 nominees have announced do far.

In the latest list, realtor Lallan Reddy, said to be a relative of Janardhan Reddy’s wife Lakshmi Aruna, has been given the BJP ticket to take on home minister Ramalinga Reddy in BTM layout. BJP state spokesperson Vivek Reddy was earlier tipped to get this ticket.

Mining scam accused Janardhan’s two elder brothers -- Karunakar and Somashekar -- are the party’s candidates in Harapanahalli and Ballari city. His close aide and so-called "adopted brother" B Sreeramulu is the candidate for Molkalmuru, his nephew TH Suresh Babu is contesting from Kampli, while his uncle Sanna Fakeerappa is the party candidate for Ballari rural.

"It feels like 2004 again," a BJP old-timer told ET pointing out that members of Janardhan’s family, with more names this time, were given tickets despite BJP’s pronouncement it had nothing to do with him. Another party leader justified it saying the party leadership went by surveys.

The fourth list also has two new women candidates-- H Lilavati in Ramanagaram and Nandini Gowda in Kanakapura -- to face JD(S) chief ministerial candidate H D Kumaraswamy and Congress state campaign committee chief DK Shivakumar.
