BCCI contemplates naming series after Sachin Tendulkar

Mangalore Today News Network

New Delhi, Sep 08, 2014: During BCCI’s informal meeting on Sunday in Chennai, the prospect of naming a series after cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar was discussed.

sachintendulka21 members of the Indian board had met to discuss issues related to BCCI’s Annual General Meeting. It was during this meeting that some members suggested a series be named after the 41-year-old.

A leading Mumbai-based daily quoted BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel saying: "It is too premature to talk about it at the moment. Before naming a series after Tendulkar, we have to first get into a bilateral series talk with some country. We should first get a commitment from the other board. We want a prestigious series to be named after Tendulkar."

As of now, the Test series between India and Australia is named after Sunil Gavaskar and Allan Border and it is called the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The recently concluded Test series between India and England on English soil is named after Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and is called the Pataudi Trophy.

When India host England, the series is called Anthony De Mello Trophy, which is named after one of the BCCI founders, Anthony Stanislaus de Mello.

The BCCI decided to convene a Working Committee meet on September 26 to solve the impasse related to its much-anticipated Annual General Meeting.

Among other decisions taken at the meeting, it was decided that the fifth ODI of the upcoming home series against the West Indies will now be held on October 20 in Kolkata. The match was earlier scheduled for October 17 in Cuttack.

This was prompted by an earlier decision to award the October 22 Twenty20 match to Cuttack.

The West Indies will begin their six weeks tour with a five-match ODI series beginning in Kochi on October 8, followed by the one-off T20I and a three-match Test series beginning from October 30 in Hyderabad.

Besides, the BCCI also decided to conduct the Annual Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi Memorial Lecture in Kolkata.
