As Their Parties Clash, Kumar Vishwas Offers Praise for PM Modi

Mangalore Today News Network

New Delhi, Sep 10, 2014:  Prime Minister Narendra Modi has chalked up a new fan. Kumar Vishwas of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) described him as a pro-active leader has helped end "the policy paralysis of the previous government.

Kumar Vishwas " Mr Vishwas also said his praise for the PM should not be seen as inappropriate, despite their membership of rival parties. "Today, if he is PM, then he is my PM, even if I have not voted for him. If he governs well, I will praise him and if he doesn’t, I will criticize him," Mr Vishwas said.

He was also unafraid to criticize his party president, Arvind Kejriwal, who opted out of running Delhi in February after 49 days in office.  Mr Kejriwal has since said that he regrets that decision. Rightly so, Mr Vishwas suggested: "It was his (Kejriwal’s) call."

AAP was formed about 22 months ago. With a stated agenda to fight corruption; it delivered outstanding results in the Delhi election in December.  But in recent months, many in its top ranks have been scathing of Mr Kejriwal’s leadership.  Speaking to NDTV on Wednesday, the AAP chief said for a group this young, "It would be wrong if everything were hunky-dory in the party." He also said, "I admit I may have many failings, but as a group, our intent cannot be questioned."

In the national election in May, Mr Vishwas, a Hindi poet and lecturer, ran unsuccessfully against Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi in Amethi in Uttar Pradesh. He said that he will not abandon plans to attend an event in Gujarat on the 17th to celebrate Mr Modi’s birthday. "The party can expel me," he dared, "if it sees anything wrong in this."

Mr Vishwas also warned, "The day AAP becomes a typical political party (God forbid), I will quit politics." But he made it clear that his plans do not include membership of the PM’s party at a future point.
