5 killed as tree falls on cable car rope in Kashmir’s Gulmarg

Srinagar, June 25, 2017:  Five people died and a number of tourists are suspected to have been stranded in the cable cars of Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir, after a tree fell between the two gondola towers and snapped the cable. Sources said the service has been stopped and rescue operations are underway.

gulmarg cable carThe gondola service of Gulmarg is hugely popular, drawing thousands of people in summer. The area is also a centre of winter sports. With one of the finest ski slopes in the world, Gulmarg drawn skiers from across the world through the winter.

Senior superintendent of police Baramullah, Imtiyaz Hussain told Hindustan Times a husband and wife and their two children from Delhi were killed in the accident. A local guide also lost his life.

Tourism is one of the biggest means of earning for the people in Kashmir. It is said that 60% of Kashmiri’s bank on tourism.
