Bhopal, Aug 16, 2018 : For residents in Madhya Pradesh’s Shivpuri district, an Independence Day holiday was just the right excuse to visit the nearby waterfall for an afternoon picnic on Wednesday. Little did they know a harmless outing could turn tragic, so soon.

Eleven people were swept away while bathing in the stream near the waterfall; they have been rescued.

Forty-five people in all, including the 11 who were taken away by strong currents and trapped on rocks downstream after a sudden increase in water level following a heavy downpour at the Sultangarh waterfall, have been rescued, senior police officer Rajesh Hingankar said.

The waterfall is located in Subhashpura area bordering Gwalior district.

"I would like to congratulate the administration for acting swiftly and rescuing people," Madhya Pradesh minister Yashodhara Raje Scindia said.

On camera earlier, people can be seen stranded on rocks, in the middle of the water stream, in heavy current. Suddenly, a few of them get washed away.

There was a sudden surge in water around 4:30 pm on Wednesday, possibly due to heavy rain upstream, catching those bathing near the waterfall unawares, the police said.

The rescue operation involved teams of the navy, Border Security Force and the state disaster response force. A helicopter was also used to rescue five people, Mr Higankar said.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who had been overseeing the rescue efforts, thanked Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for their quick support.
