Indian President Abdul Kalam addresses the nation in New Delhi 25 January 2005, in a speech on the eve of the Republic Day holiday.   India’s president called for a war on unemployment to avoid "shattering" the dreams of the nation’s youth. Referring to India’s booming economy, President Kalam said the nation should go into "mission mode" to spearhead job schemes that would help turn  the country of over one billion people into a developed nation by 2020.

APJ Abdul Kalam wears a traditional hat a present from folk dancers from the Indian state of Tamil Nadu after they performed a dance at The Presidential Palace in New Delhi, 28 January 2006. Some 3000 performers from across India danced before an audience including Kalam as part of India’s 57th Republic Day celebrations.
