’Riots In Poll-Bound States No Coincidence’: Congress Targets BJP in Parliament

Mangalore Today News Network

New Delhi, Aug 13, 2014: The Congress today sharply attacked the ruling BJP in Parliament over what it called rising communal violence since it took power.

Mallikarjun kharge"Why have there been so many riots in the past 2-3 months? Who is behind these incidents?" questioned Mallikarjun Kharge, the leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha.

"It is not a coincidence that riots are taking place only in poll-bound states. More than 600 riots have taken place in the last three months and state governments have been blamed," he added.

Mr Kharge said there were more incidents of communal violence in states where the BJP-led coalition was strong.

"If you are in power, it doesn’t mean you try to suppress people or incite people," Mr Kharge said, amid protests from the ruling benches.

"We talk of unity, you talk of dividing society," he added.

Speaking next, the BJP’s Yogi Adityanath rebutted that there had been 800 incidents of communal violence last year on the Congress-led UPA’s watch.

"The Congress must apologise for their announcement based on communal politics," the saffron-robed BJP MP said, alleging a "conspiracy" against the Hindu way of life.

"Hindutva is a symbol of Indian nationalism and if you malign it, you will pay for it," he said.

The Congress’ demand for a debate on communal violence saw an unusually aggressive Rahul Gandhi join protests at the Well of the house last week. He later said, "only one man’s voice is heard in Parliament," in what was seen as an allusion to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
