Won’t give an inch: Yediyurappa slams Uddhav Thackeray over his ’Karnataka-occupied areas’ remark

Bengaluru, Jan 18, 2021:     Uddhav Thackeray has come under attack over his remarks on Karnataka-Maharashtra border issue after he spoke about his government’s commitment towards incorporating into the state the areas of Karnataka where Marathi-speaking people are in majority.

 

Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Monday hit out at Uddhav Thackeray for raking up the border issue between the two states. Condemning his Maharashtra counterpart’s remarks, Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa said the statement is “unwarranted and goes against the federal structure of the nation.”

“I am pained at Maharashtra Chief Minister’s remarks that can disturb the prevailing harmonious atmosphere. I expect Shri Uddhav Thackeray, as a true Indian, to show his commitment and respect to the principles of federalism in letter and spirit,” the Karnataka CM said.

Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa said such a statement can disrupt the peace and harmony among people.

Calling it an attempt to disturb the harmonious relationship between Kannada and Marathi speaking population in the two states, the Karnataka CM said in a statement on Monday, “Marathi people live in harmony with Kannadigas. Likewise, Kannadigas living in the border districts of Maharashtra are living in harmony with the Marathi people there. I condemn Shri Thakeray’s comments which can disrupt the peace and harmony among people.”

Earlier, Siddaramaiah slammed Uddhav Thackeray and warned him against instigating a resolved issue.

“I strongly condemn the statement made by Uddhav Thackeray about our Belagavi. Belagavi is an integral part of Karnataka. Don’t try to instigate us by bringing up the issue which is already resolved,” Siddaramaiah wrote on Twitter.’
What is the controversy?

Maharashtra claims Belagavi and some other areas, which was part of the erstwhile Bombay Presidency but currently in Karnataka, on linguistic grounds, contending that the majority of the population in these areas is Marathi-speaking.

Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday said that his government is committed towards incorporating into the state the areas of Karnataka where Marathi-speaking people are in majority.

"Bringing Karnataka-occupied Marathi-speaking and cultural areas in Maharashtra will be the true tribute to those who accepted martyrdom in the boundary battle. We are united and committed towards it. Respects to the martyrs with this promise," the Maharashtra CMO tweeted.
