On Sunday morning, Mohan, the owner of a firecracker store, went to the store with his grandchildren, 8-year-old Anush and 6-year old Tejas.

At around 12 pm, the onlookers saw smoke emanating from Mohan’s store and firecrackers bursting inside the store.

The residents informed the fire department about the incident. As the nearest fire department was almost 10 km away, the onlookers tried to douse the fire on their own.

Because of the flammable nature of material inside the shop, soon the entire area was caught in the blaze. By the time the fire tenders reached the place almost 30 minutes later, the whole shop was gutted.

The firefighters recovered the burnt bodies of Mohan and his grandchildren, Anush and Tejas, from the site.

When the District Collector Shanmugasundaram arrived at the spot, angry mob protested, saying that the lives could have been saved had a fire station been built in the area.

The officials have assured the public that strict action will be taken and other firecracker shops will be inspected to check if the safety measures as per law are in place.
