This is one of the devastating attacks on Afghan security forces in recent months.

Some reports claimed that the explosions struck two buses that were transporting police cadets, the interior ministry said.

The exact toll, however, was not immediately known.

"We are still investigating the precise nature of the blast, whether it was suicide attack, car bomb or whatever -- we do not know it at the moment," AFP quoted a senior official as saying.

Paghman District Governor Haji Mohammad Musa Khan told the BBC that many more had been injured.

The dead included Nepali security guards working for the Canadian embassy.
