At a party workers’ meeting held on Friday, MLA Shamanur Shivashankarappa had implied that women should only be restricted to the kitchen while questioning Gayathri’s understanding of the city’s problems.

Saina termed the remarks as sexist and added that such comments are least expected from a party that was running Ladki Hoon Lad Sakti Hoon campaign.

“Woman should be restricted to the kitchen”- This is what a top Karnataka leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa ji has said . This sexist jibe at @bjp4india candidate from Davanagere Gayathri Siddeshwara ji is least expected from a party that says Ladki Hoon Lad Sakti Hoon,” Saina wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Saina, who became the first ever Indian badminton player to win an Olympic medal in 2012, then pointed out how one one hand, the Indian government has passed the Women’s Reservation Bill while on the other, misogynistic remarks are being made.

“When I won medals for Bharat on the play field what would congress party have preferred I should have done? Why say like that when all the girls and women dream of achieving big in any field they like ….On one hand we are doing Nari Shakti ko Vandan. The Women’s Reservation Bill has been passed under leadership of our PM Modi sir and on the other hand Nari Shakti ka apman & misogynistic people.. Really upsetting,” she wrote.

What Shivashankarappa Had Said

While commenting on BJP Lok Sabha nominee Gayathri, Shivashankarappa had said, “As you all aware, she wanted to give a Lotus to Modi after winning the election. First, let her understand the problems in Davangere. We have done developmental work in the region. It’s one thing if you know how to talk, but they only know how to cook in the kitchen. The opposition party lacks the strength to talk in public.”
