Rapes occur in ’India’ not ’Bharat’: RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat

Silchar, Jan 4: RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has said that rape was more prevalent in urban areas of India which are influenced by western values and education.

 

Mohan BhagathAddressing a gathering in Silchar, in Assam, Mr Bhagwat said, "Such crimes hardly take place in ’Bharat’, but they occur frequently in ’India’."
 
"You go to villages and forests of the country and there will be no such incidents of gangrape or sex crimes. They are prevalent in some urban belts. Besides new legislation, Indian ethos and attitude towards women should be revisited in the context of ancient Indian values," he said.

Mr Bhagwat’s comments came on a day when the police formally charged five men with  the murder and  rape of a young medical student in Delhi.

’Amanat’s’ (NOT her real name) assault and death united the country in sorrow, anger and a determination to press for stronger laws to protect women.
