Rajeev Shukla may become interim BCCI president

New Delhi, Sep 22, 2015:  With the sudden demise of Jagmohan Dalmiya on Sunday evening, the seat of BCCI president has been left vacant and Indian Premier League chairman Rajeev Shukla seems the most likely candidate to take over, at a Special General Meeting to be called by secretary Anurag Thakur.

According to the BCCI constitution, Thakur needs to send out the notice for the SGM by October 5 and the meeting needs to take place within three weeks of the notice when an interim president will be picked.

A senior BCCI official told Mail Today that Shukla and Sharad Pawar are the two contenders for the top post at present. Shukla is said to have the backing of the BJP top brass while those very people aren’t too keen on having Pawar back in the hot seat, even though the Maharashtra strongman has shown keen interest and was also likely to contest at this year’s Annual General Meeting.

"One has to calculate well and according to the current situation, Shukla is the most favoured candidate. He is not only on good terms with Thakur, but also has the backing of top BJP officials.

Keeping those equations in mind, one must realise that Pawar doesn’t really have that support. "Also, it is East Zone’s turn to nominate the president and it is clear that Shukla is trying to work that angle in his favour. But relations change overnight in the BCCI," he said.
