Kochi, Sep 12, 2017: Newly inducted Union minister Alphonse Kannanthanam said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is doing what a good Christian is supposed to do.

PM Modi.jAddressing a public reception on Sept 10 at Muvattupuzha near Kochi, the Minister of State for Tourism said, “People ask why I, a Christian, joined BJP. My answer to them is that Modi is doing what a good Christian is supposed to do. I would do whatever possible to realise the PM’s dream of creating a new India where all Indians can live with dignity.”

“The BJP is ruling the country for crores of poor people. Everyone in Kerala also should cooperate to make that change reflected in the state,” said Kannanthanam, whose ministership is seen as a bid to woo Christian votes in Kerala.

Before joining BJP in 2011, Kannanthanam, a former bureaucrat, was an independent left front supported legislator representing the Christian stronghold Kanjirappally constituency in Kerala.

According to a report in Deccan Chronicle, Bishop Mathew Arackkal of Kanjirappally has said the Catholic Church does not think that BJP or any other political party is untouchable.

The Church maintained good relationship with the union government whenever National Democratic Alliance was in power, he said. The induction of Kannamthanam into the Union Cabinet was in recognition of his achievements and ability, and there was no need to interpret the same as an attempt to appease the Christian minority by the BJP, the bishop said.
