Over 30 arrested Over Felling Of Trees in Aarey colony, Mumbai

Mumbai, Oct 05, 2019: After the Bombay High Court on Friday dismissed petitions opposing tree-felling in Aarey Colony in north Mumbai, a prime green lung of the city, for Metro work, activists alleged that authorities were hacking trees. Activists alleged that over 200 had been cut by Friday night.Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray warned its ally BJP on the issue of felling of trees in Aarey Colony and said that a new government is coming to power and it will not spare those who have murdered the trees in Aarey Colony.

Earlier on Saturday, 5 October, Mumbai police arrested at least 29 people who were protesting against the move. The police have imposed Section 144 of the CrPC in Aarey Colony and its surrounding areas following massive protests.

The activists have claimed that the felling of trees is not supposed to begin for 15 days after the authorities have the required permission. However, Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Chief Ashwini Bhide has called it “false propaganda”.
