Mullaperiyar Dam safe: SC panel experts

New Delhi, Jan 04, 2012: A Supreme Court-appointed panel has found that there was no after-effect of the recent tremors on the Mullaperiyar Dam and that the dam was safe, according to sources.

 

 

Sources added that the two technical experts who inspected the Mullaperiyar Dam will submit their report in February.

This can bring some breakthrough in the ongoing war between Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

The Kerala government administers the Mullaperiyar dam, while Tamil Nadu has the right to draw water from the dam. The bone of contention is raising the height of the dam from 136 feet to 142 feet.

In 2006, the Supreme Court allowed the storage level to be raised to 142 feet. Kerala reacted with a ’Dam Safety Act’ against the order. The matter is still pending before the Supreme Court empowered committee.
