Meghalaya to get its first train on November 29

Shillong, November 26, 2014:  Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Meghalaya’s first train connecting Mendipatha with Dudhnoi in Assam. The move will bring the state on the railway map.

Modi will flag-off the train from Maligaon in Guwahati to Mendipathar in North Garo Hills on November 29, reported the Press Trust of India. After the inauguration, he will address a gathering to Garo hills residents through video conferencing, Deputy Commissioner of North Garo Hills district D Sangma said.

Chief Minister Mukul Sangma had laid the foundation of the 19.47 km broad guage railway line in 2012, after it was approved in 1992-93.

The British had unsuccessfully built the Cherra Companyganj State Railways in Khasi and Jaintia hills region in 1895-96.
