Thiruvananthapuram May 03, 2016 : Kerala Chief Minister Oomen Chandy on Wednesday assured assistance to the family of a 30-year-old Dalit woman, who was allegedly raped and brutally murdered on April 28.

He visited Perumbavoor on Wednesday and met the victim’s family. He said that the government will provide all aid to the family if the election commission permits. He has also promised jobs to the victim’s family.

The victim’s family said they were being targeted by their neighbours, who wanted them to shift from the place.
Based on statements recorded so far, the investigators said the crime could have been committed by a single person. Police also suspect the killer was someone known to the victim as they have not found signs of any forced entry into the house.

The incident, which took place in the afternoon, has sparked protests across the election-bound state, with the Opposition Left alleging breakdown of law and order under the Chandy government.

The law student, who hailed from a poor family, was subjected to rape and brutal assault using sharp edged weapons before being murdered at her house in Perumbavoor on April 28. She was found dead in a pool of blood at her one room home at 8 PM on the same day by her mother when she returned from work.

Police are questioning three suspects out of which two of them are the victim’s neighbours and one is a close relative.
Ernakulam Range IG Mahipal Yadav said there were signs of strangulation, smothering and 13 injuries on the woman’s neck, chest and at several other places of the body. Some reports said there were around 20 injuries and that the victim’s intestines were pulled out.
The crime has chilling similarities with the Nirbhaya case that took place in Delhi where a young Delhi student was gangraped in a moving bus in 2012. The girl later succumbed to her injuries.
