Karnataka Urban Local Bodies results: Cong tops state, BJP close second

Bengaluru, Sep 03, 2018 : The Congress secured the highest number of seats, followed closely by the BJP, in the Urban Local Bodies (ULB) polls.

JD(S) emerged third in the race for power in civic bodies. Counting of votes was taken up across Karnataka on Monday morning.

In 2,662 of the 2,709 seats declared so far, Congress won 982, the BJP 929 and the JD(S) 329. Independent candidates won in 329 wards.

In three city corporations that went to polls, BJP has bagged Shivamogga winning 20 of the 35 seats. A hung verdict has emerged in Mysuru and Tumakuru city corporations.

The BJP emerged the single largest party in Mysuru winning 22 of the 62 seats but failed to cross the halfway mark. Congress won 19 and the JD(S) 18 seats.

In Tumakuru too, BJP emerged as the single largest party winning 12 seats of the total 35. The Congress and the JD(S) won 10 seats each.

As many as 29 city municipalities, 53 town municipalities, 20 town panchayats besides the three corporations went to polls on August 31.

The JD(S) and the Congress, who are alliance partners in the state coalition government, went alone in the municipality polls.

Cooperation Minister Bandeppa Kashampur expressed his happiness with the performance of the JD(S) in the polls. “The results indicate that people are happy with the performance of the coalition government”, he said.
