Jaipur Police launches drive against drunken driving, penalises 295 vehicle owners

Jaipur, Oct 21 2019: In an extensive drive against drunken driving, the Jaipur Police on Sunday took action against 295 vehicle owners/ drivers including those of 75 cars/ jeeps, 208 two-wheelers and 12 other vehicles.

Different teams of the traffic police in Jaipur conducted late night operations on October 18 and October 19.

Police said that the vehicle owners have been booked under Section 185 of Motor Vehicles Act and their licences will be impounded. They will have to pay hefty fines, police said.

Earlier in August, around 266 people were fined during the special drive by the Jaipur traffic police, The Times of India reported.

That month, as many as 20 teams were deployed at various checkpoints between 7 pm and 10 pm while each team was equipped with two breathalyser machines, body cameras, reflective jackets and torches, the news agency reported police as saying.

In September, the government rolled out the amended Motor Vehicles Act 2019 that called for stricter traffic rules and hefty fines.

According to the new law, drunken driving penalty, which was initially Rs 2,000, has been increased to six months imprisonment and/or Rs 10,000 fine for the first offence and two years imprisonment and/or fine of Rs 15,000 for the second offence.
