New Delhi, Sep 28, 2020: Indian population is still far from achieving herd immunity against Covid-19, Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan said on Saturday citing ICMR’s second sero-survey. The minister was addressing his followers on social media when he responded to various questions related to the pandemic and other key issues. India’s coronavirus tally crossed the 60-lakh mark on Monday with a spike of 82,170 new cases and 1,039 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

 

The CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) here has launched a study in hospital environment to assess how long and far the coronavirus can stay in air from an infected person, in a bid to strengthen the safety of health workers. The objective of the study, which began around ten days ago, was to know whether the virus actually travels in the air and if it does, how far it goes and primarily intended to help the healthcare personnel, CCMB Director Rakesh Mishra said. The study comes two months after more than 200 scientists wrote to the World Health Organisation (WHO), claiming there was evidence that the coronavirus was airborne.

Goa’s Director General of Police Mukesh Kumar Meena on Monday tested positive for coronavirus infection, a senior health department official said. Meena is admitted in a private hospital and his condition is stable, he said. "His test report came out positive on Monday morning. He has mild symptoms," the official said.

India’s coronavirus tally crossed the 60-lakh mark on Monday with a spike of 82,170 new cases and 1,039 deaths reported in the last 24 hours. The case tally stands at 60,74,703 including 9,62,640 active cases, 5,01,6521 cured/discharged/migrated & 95,542 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Sunday directed officials to prepare a detailed action plan to run a large-scale public movement to make people aware about following Covid-19 protocols, including wearing masks and maintaining social distancing. Chairing a review meeting on the Covid-19 situation, the chief minister expressed concern over the carelessness shown by people in following Covid-19-related protocols and stressed that the situation can be addressed through a large-scale public movement. He asked officials to involve social activists, NGOs, students, teachers among others in the exercise.

While citing the unreleased second sero-survey conducted by the Indian Council for Medical Research, the minister urged people to continue to adhere to protocols he referred to as ’social vaccine’ in his address to Parliament earlier this month. The use of face masks is most important and they must be worn even in places of worship, Dr Harsh Vardhan added. The sero-survey report should not create a sense of complacency among the people, he went on to say during the ’Sunday Samvad’ interaction with his followers on social media. In its first sero-survey released in May 2020, ICMR had revealed that the nationwide prevalence of Covid-19 was merely 0.73 per cent.
