West Bengal, Nov 11, 2019: Cyclone Bulbul has claimed at least 12 lives in India as it hit the coastal districts of West Bengal in the early hours of Sunday, official reports said. North 24 Parganas was the worst-hit district with reports of five deaths in the district. The cyclone then smashed into the low-lying areas of neighbouring Bangladesh, killing at least 8 people and injuring 15, news agency PTI reported.

The West Bengal government has initiated relief efforts in the areas affected by the cyclone with CM Mamata Banerjee likely to make an aerial survey on Monday to assess the damage. Meanwhile, PM Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Banerjee and assured all possible assistance from the Centre.

In Odisha, two people lost their lives as heavy rain and high-velocity winds triggered by cyclone ‘Bulbul’ wreaked havoc in most parts of the coastal state, PTI reported. The cyclone also caused extensive damage to around 40 per cent standing crops and over six lakh hectares of cultivable land spread over five districts.
