Coronavirus: Social distancing violations increase as India eases lockdown restrictions

Mangalore Today News Network

Delhi, Jun 03, 2020: Many instances of social distancing violations have been reported across the country since lockdown restrictions were significantly relaxed from June 1.

Images from many parts of the country — especially major cities — are proof of social distancing norms being violated. While cases are already rising faster than before in India, flouting social distancing norms could worsen the situation, IndiaToday reported.

IndiaToday.in spoke to two people in Kolkata who said social distancing norms are not being followed in many parts of the city after the lockdown restrictions were lifted.

They, however, said that the rush was higher on June 1 as many people reported to work after a long break. However, the limited transportation facilities in the city led to chaos and a lack of social distancing.

While buses are allowed to carry only 20 passengers in Kolkata, many images show that buses were packed beyond their seating capacity as well. Sources confirmed the same to IndiaToday.in.

Violation of social distancing norms was also reported from many other cities including Delhi, Mumbai and more places as marketplaces were allowed to open.

The increase in social distancing violations can be catastrophic for India, which has been recording over 8,000 cases since the past few days.

Even though the government has allowed a majority of activities to open up, it is necessary for people to follow social distancing norms as the deadly virus is far from being contained in India.
