Bhopal hospital dumps coronavirus patient’s body on road, son says he was alive in ambulance

Bhopal, July 07, 2020:    In yet another case of inhuman treatment to the dead bodies of coronavirus patients, a Covid-designated hospital in Bhopal city of Madhya Pradesh abandoned the body of a 57-year-old corona positive man on the road allegedly after realising that he had died in the ambulance. The patient’s son has said that his father was alive when he was being shifted to the hospital.

 

The victim, identified as Wajid Ali, suffered from renal diseases and was admitted to Peoples General Hospital in Bhopal. As he started developing coronavirus symptoms, Wajid Ali was tested for the infection. On being tested positive for coronavirus, Wajid Ali, his son Abid Ali says, was referred to Chirayu Hospital.

While the Chirayu Hospital did come to pick him up, the ambulance returned to the People’s Hospital about an hour later, where Wajid Ali was first taken to and dumped his body on the road in front of the hospital.

"An ambulance from Chirayu hospital reached Peoples hospital at around 4:30 pm and after Wajid Ali was taken, we started the process of fumigation of the hospital as per the protocol and while the process was still on, the ambulance returned and dumped his body on the road," Dr Manju of Peoples General Hospital said.

India Today TV has accessed the CCTV footage of the incident. The visuals show Wajid Ali being taken to the hospital in an ambulance and then being dumped at the same spot.

After the district administration was informed about the incident, it got its act together and directed Chirayu Hospital to pick up Wajid Ali’s body from the spot.

However, before this could have happened, more than one hour had passed. In the video, accessed by India Today TV, doctors of Peoples General Hospital can be seen trying to revive Wajid Ali.

"This had to be done because the process of fumigation was on. Once the hospital staff came to know that the patient had tested positive for coronavirus, the required SOPs had to be followed and we were doing the same," Dr Manju said.

A distressed Abid Ali, while talking to India Today TV, said his father was alive when he was being shifted to the Chirayu Hospital.

"I do not know what happened in the ambulance but why did the district administration have to shift him to the hospital if they were to dump him on the road like this," he said.

The hospital, in its statement, has claimed that the patient was taken back to the Peoples General Hospital as it was close and his condition had started deteriorating. Chirayu Hospital MD and Director Dr Ajay Goenka said another ambulance with a ventilator and a doctor was sent back within 20 minutes.

Dr Ajay Goenka, Chirayu Hospital, said, "We received a call from the Peoples General Hospital that a man suffering from renal diseases has tested positive and has to be shifted to Chirayu Hospital. We were also informed that all his vitals including BP were normal so we sent a normal ambulance. The patient was picked up from the hospital but while he was being brought to Chirayu Hospital, the driver and nurse of the ambulance realised that his condition was deteriorating so they took the patient back to Peoples hospital as they were closer to it. Simultaneously, they informed Chirayu Hospital and another ambulance with a ventilator, and a doctor was sent which reached the spot within 20 minutes."
