Assam: Fresh flood claims 2 lives in Lakhimpur, nearly 29,000 people affected

Assam, Aug 14, 2020: Two people were killed in Assam’s Lakhimpur district on Friday when they drowned in floodwaters. The tragedy took place in Naoboicha area of the district. With this, the overall death toll due to floods in Assam this year has risen to 112.

A fresh flood has hit Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts affecting nearly 29,000.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), Singori and Ronganadi rivers have submerged 54 villages in the two districts and over 3,000 hectares of cropland is believed to have been affected.

In Lakhimpur’s Daluhat area, the Singori river washed away a portion of the road and besides damaging seven other roads in the district.

Many villagers have been forced to leave their homes and take shelter elsewhere as floodwaters entered their homes.

Overall, more than 57 lakh people are estimated to have been affected in this year’s flood in 30 districts of Assam.

In Narayanpur in Lakhimpur district, a man fell into a river with his motorcycle as he was trying to cross a bamboo bridge on Friday.

The bamboo bridge collapsed as he was trying to cross the river.

However, locals were able to rescue him in time and pulled him and his motorcycle out of the river.
