The crash is believed to have been caused by a technical failure that led to alerts not being sounded when both trains wound up on the same track. One of the trains involved in the crash is a commuter train belonging to the Hyderabad Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) while the other is the Hundry Express that runs between Secunderabad City Junction and Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh.
