4 killed by Cyclone Nisarga, Mumbai to get heavy rain as storm turns into depression

Mumbai, Jun 04, 2020: Severe cyclonic storm Cyclone Nisarga that hit Maharashtra and Gujarat coasts on Wednesday has further weakened into a depression over the west Vidarbha region in Maharashtra. Death toll due to the cyclone that hit Maharashtra with wind speed of 110 kmph has gone up to 4.

Mumbai and adjoining areas of Thane, Palghar will receive intense spells of rainfall, IndiaToday reported.

 

Relief and restoration efforts by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are ongoing in several parts of Maharashtra after the cyclonic storm uprooted trees and damaged houses in the north coast.

IMD has said the severe cyclonic storm that made landfall in Raigad on Wednesday afternoon has now weakened into a depression over the west Vidarbha region in Maharashtra on Thursday morning. The depression is now moving east-northeastwards and will further weaken into a Well-Marked Low Pressure Area (WML) by Thursday evening.

IMD has said intense spells of rainfall is likely to occur in the districts of Palghar, Thane, Mumbai and Raigad till noon on Thursday.

More teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has moved to Raigad for restoration work post Cyclone Nisarga that made landfall in Alibag on Wednesday. Total 20 NDRF teams have been deployed across Maharashtra, including 7 teams each in Raigad and Mumbai for restoration work.

Death toll in the Yesterday’s cyclone is reported to have killed 4 people in Maharashtra. Earlier, two people in Pune and one in Raigad district died due to cyclone-related accidents. The fourth death, that of a minor, was reported from Alibag.

Raigad district bore the maximum impact of the cyclone where tin roofs on terraces of residential buildings flew away and several trees and electricity poles were uprooted. Several cars were damaged after trees fell on the parked vehicles. Tidal waves measuring up to 6-8 feet lashed parts of the coastal areas.

Strong winds have uprooted trees in Mumbai and its outskirts. Several cars were seen lying damaged under uprooted trees on Mumbai roads. However, Mumbai managed to escape major damages after the cyclonic storm weakened in the evening and bypassed the city.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said nearly 20,000 people in Mumbai were shifted to the temporary shelters and 30,000 others shifted on their own to safer locations. The BMC said 117 trees have fallen in Mumbai. Nine incidents of wall or portion of house collapse have been reported in Mumbai so far.

39 incidents of short-circuit were reported in Mumbai due to the impact of the cyclone and nine incidents of house fall, including three that were from south Mumbai and four from western suburbs.

According to the BMC, a high tide of more than four meters is expected on Thursday at 10.57 am. Mumbai will experience heavy rainfall on Thursday.
