"Both the militants, who had engaged security forces since Monday morning in an abandoned building near a CRPF camp in Karan Nagar area of Srinagar were killed on Tuesday afternoon," a police officer said.

"While one militant was neutralised as he came out of the underconstruction building to get into an adjacent building, the other was killed inside the building that they took refuge in on Monday," he said and added the firing has stopped and a combing operation is underway.

Security forces have sealed the area to prevent protests near the encounter site. The move, according to officials, was taken as there were apprehensions that the stone pelters might try to disrupt the gunfight and help the holed up militants flee.

An eyewitness said that all the entry and exit points to Karan Nagar have been sealed by the police and paramilitary CRPF.

The encounter had erupted early on Monday morning, after militants tried to mount a fidayeen (suicide) attack on a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp in the area, housing the 23 battalion and CRPF director general’s office.

However, an alert CRPF sentry averted the attack by firing at approaching militants forcing them to flee and take shelter in a nearby underconstruction building, from where the ultras fired at security forces for almost 30 hours.

A CRPF trooper was killed and a policeman of special operations group of the Jammu and Kashmir Police was injured in the gunfight on Monday.

People living in the vicinity of the encounter said that throughout the night there was heavy exchange of fire.
