Celebration of Bishop Derek Fernandes’ Visit to Kuwait

Kuwait, 30 November 2011: The inspiring visit of Bishop Derek Fernandes of Karwar to Kuwait revealed hope and joy for the members of the North Kanara Association Kuwait (NKA-K). Bishop Derek celebrated Holy Mass in St Therese Church, Salmiya in the morning with NKA-K members. It was wonderful to have such whole-hearted community participation especially camp workers who came all the way to give due respect to the Bishop.

 A gathering followed at the Indian English Academy School Hall (Don Bosco School), Salmiya with ’flower petal’ greetings from the little children. The Sam Alphonso couple, patron members of NKA-K, together with president Joseph L D’Souza and vice president John Fernandes welcomed the Bishop to light the Lamp amidst a beautiful prayer dance by the children.

 Joseph D’Souza in his opening speech extended a warm welcome to the dignitaries, guests and members.

 Bishop Derek shared His message "to remain united and to reach out to one another."  Sam Alphonso, briefed about his and the Bishop’s recent visit to the villages of the Karwar Diocese, on their appalling rate of illiteracy and ignorance. Alphonso emphasized the urgent need to educate the children, a pathway to empower and build up the next generation in the Karwar Diocese.

 

The cultural programme incorporated a well-composed Konkani welcome song, solo and duet vocalists, entertaining skits with comedy combined with Arabic and Konkani folk dances, with animation by Marita Miranda (English) and Salvador D’Souza (Konkani). John Fernandes proposed the vote of thanks. All enjoyed a sumptuous buffet.

All good things come to an end but not too soon for the North Kanara Association­ Kuwait. The committee members stood by their motto ’United We Serve’ by inviting the domestic workers to the Holy Eucharistic celebration at the Holy Family Cathedral, Kuwait. An opportunity for Bishop Derek to speak with His flock and share in their grievances.

 Sam Alphonso requested the Bishop to urge the people to educate their children and assured financial assistance for this cause. At the Padre Pio Hall, the committee members mingled with domestic workers, turning this get-together into a significant reach-out. Refreshments were served.

The Bishop departed for India after his brief visit to Kuwait. The NKA-K Committee members along with Sam Alphonso bid adieu to Bishop Derek at the Kuwait International Airport. His flock looks forward to seeing him more often in their midst.
