The weather office has predicted thunderstorm and heavy to moderate rainfalls in many parts of the country, including coastal areas, on Tuesday.

Traffic jams were building up on roads between Dubai and Sharjah, where people spent hours on Sunday and Monday in their attempt to get home or to work after a section of the Emirates Road was blocked off following last week’s sharp showers.

Water-logged roads brought traffic on many roads in Sharjah and Dubai virtually at standstill, as heavy rains lashed the emirates overnight and continued to drizzle in the morning.

Motorists who started from Sharjah as early as 6 am were still on road till 9am and the situation suggested they wouldn’t reach their destinations anytime soon.

Al Wahda street, the main link to Dubai and Sharjah, seemed like a one massive car park; with tailback of vehicles extending from the road and continuing well into the interiors of Dubai.

All the crossings on Dubai Creek remained slow throughout morning, with Garhoud Bridge and Shindagha Tunnel being the slowest. Shaikh Zayed road also witnessed unusually slow traffic.

Mercury levels in coastal areas dropped significantly due to the thunderstorm, bringing the minimum temperature down to 17 degrees celcius.
