Doha, 29 November 2010: Day Fresh Bakery bagged the MCC-Voltas Volleyball Trophy in a well fought match against Sanskriti in the second MCC-Voltas Men’s Open Volleyball Tournament played at old Ideal Indian School Grounds, on Friday, 26th November, 2010, organised by Mangalore Cricket Club (MCC), Qatar, on the back of a highly successful Ladies Throw Ball Tournament.  One after the other the matches produced explosive action from the 9 participating teams viz. Day Fresh Bakery, Sanskrithi, Tulu Koota, Euro Parts, VOLIQ, Fashion Line, A.T.S., Al-Sadd Bros & the home team MCC.

The Main Sponsor of the Tournament was Gulf Incon who sponsored the coveted MCC-Voltas Cup and all 9 teams put up an excellent show, in their endeavor to bag the prestigious trophy.

 
The Tournament started on Thursday 25th November at 7.00pm.  4 knockout matches were played between Sanskriti and MCC, Tulukoota and  Euro Parts, ATS & Al Sadd Brothers, and Day Fresh Bakery and Fashion line. Sanskriti, Tulukoota, Al Saad Brothers  and Day Fresh Bakery teams won their respective matches and moved on to the semifinals, except Sanskrithi who had to play a second match on 26th November, with defending champions VOLIQ.

 
Matches continued on the second day, i.e, on November 26th at 2.30 pm. The charged up and determined Sanskriti made it to the semifinals in a best of three game, winning the first and third game but not before VOLIQ gave their everything. In the first semi finals, Sanskriti beat Tulu koota in a five sets thriller and in the second semifinals Dayfresh Bakery beat Al Saad Brothers easily.
 

Subsequently, Tulu Koota beat Al Saad Brothers for the third place.

 
The formal function took place before the thrilling final match. Mr. Ronald Rodrigues, Membership Secretary, emceed the program. Flower bouquets were presented to the Guests as a token of appreciation.  The President of MCC, Mr. Richard D’Souza welcomed all present.
 

The Guest of Honour, Mr. Mohd Iqbal, President of the Ideal Indian School managing committee, in his speech appreciated MCC’s efforts in organizing various sporting events for the community. He reiterated his support to forthcoming events organized by MCC as a mark of appreciation of the service rendered by MCC to the community. He was then introduced to both the finalist teams and the referees of the match.

 
Also present on the dais as guest of honour were Alfred Sequeira and founder member Jerald D Mello. Fredrick D’Souza, Sports Secretary of MCC, proposed the vote of thanks.
 

In the nail biting finals, Sanskriti team despite the 12 sets played by them in the evening gave a tough fight to Day Fresh Bakery losing the sets in a narrow margin 25-23. 25-23, 21-25 and 25-14.  Sanskriti team Captain Moideen with his superb game led from the front in first 3 sets but faltered in the last set which gave opportunity to Day Fresh Bakery team to take the advantage in both hands. Finally tiredness took the toll on Sanskriti who let Day Fresh Bakery team win by 3-1 and won the laurels and crown as champions.
 

In the subsequent prize distribution ceremony, Mr. Sunil D Silva, Vice President of MCC, presented bronze medals and certificates to the 2nd Runner’s Up, Tulu Koota.
 

Mr. Alfred Sequeira presented silver medals to the 1st Runners Up, Sanskriti.

 
Mr. Richard D Souza, President of MCC, presented gold medals and the prestigious MCC-Voltas Trophy to the Winners of the 2nd MCC-Voltas Men’s Volleyball Tournament 2010, Day Fresh Bakery.

 
Mr. Faisal Kalloth of Day Fresh Bakery team was adjudged as Best player of the tournament and was presented with the best player trophy by President Richard.

 
In addition to the medals, all the winners and the Runners Up went home with luxurious VIP trolleys sponsored by Gulf Incon.
 

Referees Nazeer K. & Premnath did a fantastic job as they officiated tirelessly showing great passion and dedication. They were ably supported by linesmen Lancy D’Souza, Arun D’Souza, John Britto, Vijay D’Souza and  Prakash. Exciting commentary was provided by Mrs. Annette Venkat, Riana Pinto and  Mr. Abdul Salam.  Cyril D’Souza and Thelma D’Souza were the official Scorers.
 

MCC’s highly capable and efficient team of volunteers provided their support in the form of scoring, commentary and lines keeping by the able leadership of Sabinash D’Souza.

 
It was once again a feather in the cap for MCC who successfully organized yet another wonderful tournament.
