The “Shine a Light” experience is a powerful addition to the ‘Invisible: Slavery Today’ exhibit. When the exhibit first opened in 2010, it was the world’s first permanent museum exhibit on the subjects of modern-day slavery and human trafficking.

The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center (NURFC) is a museum of conscience, an education center, a convener of dialogue, and a beacon of light for inclusive freedom around the globe. “Shine a Light” interactive exposes truths about human trafficking.

Trudy Gaba, Curator, Social Justice at National Underground Railroad Freedom Center spoke to the press; ‘Since opening in 2004, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, located in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio, continues to bring into sharp focus the impactful ways systemic inequities affect communities regionally, nationally, and globally, with the hope of catalyzing positive change through awareness and direct action. In 2022, we opened “Shine a Light,” an interactive experience within the Freedom Center’s Invisible: Slavery Today, a permanent gallery dedicated to helping visitors understand the nefarious nature of human trafficking and the historical connection between present-day forced labor practices and the system of American chattel slavery. “Shine a Light” centers the courageous voices and personal stories of trafficked individuals like Harold D’Souza, who has made it his life’s mission to advocate for an end to this inhuman practice through his non-profit work with Eyes Open International. Human Trafficking cases are prevalent across the globe, but education is a powerful tool to fight injustice, and we hope you join the fight’.

Harold D’Souza was invited on October 18 th , 2023 to visit the exhibit “Shine a Light”, where his story features in a new interactive experience that invites guests to explore the space to reveal information about human trafficking in Ohio by literally shining a light on ordinary scenes.

‘It is a blessing to be the voice for the voiceless victims’ spoke Harold D’Souza.

“Human Trafficking is a nefarious and dangerously misunderstood, underreported crime against humanity”, said Woodrow Keown, Jr. President and COO of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. “Education is a powerful weapon in this fight against modern-day slavery, for both victims and abolitionists. We hope our ‘Shine a Light’ experience will engage guests to learn more about human trafficking so they can be vigilant, identify cases when they see it andact to save lives and liberate survivors”.

Those who believe they are a victim of human trafficking or believe they know someone in danger can call the national human trafficking hotline at 1-888-373-7888 or text “HELP” or “INFO” to 233733 anytime.
