Once the system is in place, 19 places of worship, most of which have existed for more than 33 years, will get licences.

All places of worship in the emirate will now come under the Department of Community Development, and any entity that wishes to set up a new place of worship in the emirate will have to contact the department.

Sultan Al Dhaheri, executive director of community participation at the department, said during a press conference that the department met with officials and religious leaders of places of worship in Abu Dhabi and explained to them the conditions and policies required for obtaining a licence in the emirate.

Al Dhaheri stressed that the country is invested in providing places of worship to people of all religions, which plays a role in promoting the bonds of love and coexistence among the different segments of society.
