Sharjah, November 13: The Karnataka Sangha Sharjah, an organization for Kannadigas, organized a sports event called Mayura Cup Tournament 2010 at Wanderer’s Club Sharjah on Nov 12, Friday. Over 2000 Kannadigas from all over the UAE witnessed the day-long event. The chief guest of the event, T. Ramanna, the secretary general of the Asian Throw Ball Federation and Throw Ball Federation of India, had arrived all the way from India to witness and inaugurate the event.

A total of 16 men’s volleyball teams, 7 ladies throw ball teams, 8 men’s kabbaddi teams, and 2 teams each for men’s and women’s tug of war, comprising 160 volley ball players, 84 throw ball players, and 90 kabbaddi players participated in the event. The spectators comprised team mates, friend, family members, relatives, and other interested people who had flocked to the venue to support and cheer the participants.


The winners of the men’s volley ball were Youngster Nakre and the runners up were Saifa friends. The winners of the women’s volley ball were Mangalore Konkans and the runners up were Jashan Dubai. The winners of the men’s kabbaddi team were Karnataka Sangha Sharjah and the runners up were Bhatkal Dubai. The men’s tug of war winners were Marga Deepa Bantwal, UAE and the runners up were Karnataka Sangha Sharjah. The winners of the women’s tug of war were Jashan Dubai and the runners up were Karnataka Sangha Sharjah. A number of special games for children were conducted by the organization.


The participating teams had their own managers, coaches, and T-shirts. The judges were able individuals, side umpire, and independent referees. The winner trophies were plated with 21 carat gold and the runner up trophies were plated with silver. The winners were also awarded cash prizes of Dhs 1,000 each and the runners up were awarded Dhs. 750 each. All the team members were honored with cups and plaques. Besides, special prizes such as Best Snatcher in Women’s Throw ball, Best Receiver, and Best All Rounder were given to Mabel of Mangalore Konkans, Prescilla Pinto of Mangalore Konkans, and Shyamala Poojary of Jashan Dubai. 


Shiv Sagar Restaurant, Bur Dubai arranged the afternoon vegetarian buffet.
