January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking prevention month. Human Trafficking is a crime in which force, fraud or coercion is used to compel a person to perform labor, services or commercial sex. It affects all populations, adults, children, men, women, foreign nationals and U.S. citizens, and all economic classes. The Defense Department continues to raise awareness and do its part to end this crime.

D’Souza during his recent visit to India spoke at more than 30 symposiums across the country, regarding prevention, education, protection, and empowerment to the vulnerable population on human labor trafficking and debt bondage.

Human trafficking is big business. Human trafficking earns profits of roughly $150 billion a year for traffickers, according to the International Labor Organization (ILO) report from 2014. The following is a breakdown of profits, by sector: $99 billion from commercial sexual exploitation, $34 billion in construction, manufacturing, mining and utilities, $9 billion in agriculture, including forestry and fishing, $8 billion dollars is saved annually by private households that employ domestic workers under conditions of focused labor.

Harold D’Souza is working with the Indian Government to start “Maanav Shoshan Hotline Number” in India.

If you or anyone you know is a victim of human labor or sex trafficking in the United States of America, please call 1-888-373-7888.

Continued Presence is a temporary Immigration Status for Victims of Human Trafficking. Foreign National Victims may qualify for other forms of immigration benefits depending on their unique circumstances. Trafficking victims are eligible to self-petition to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for T and U Visa nonimmigrant status which permits them to remain in the U.S. for up to four years and lead to lawful permanent residence, shared Harold D’Souza.

2020 National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month Awareness Event is hosted by Defense Human Resources Activity, Combating Trafficking in Persons Program Management Office and The Pentagon Force Protection Agency.
