Doha, 22 September 2010: "A family that celebrates together stays together". With that noble thought in mind, Mangalore Cricket Club (MCC), Qatar, has been celebrating the feast of the Nativity every year, for the past 18 years. This year was no different. The members of the MCC family gathered at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, September 17, 2010 in the Indian Cultural Center to celebrate the feast of Nativity also known as the family feast.

Errol D’ Cunha, committee member of the Cultural team welcomed the gathering. The Program began with the singing of newly composed MCC’s anthem "Mogacho Ektaar MCC Qatar". The lyrics and tune for this anthem were put together by Eddie Sequeira with music by Joslyn D’Mello. The singing troupe consisted of Vincent Fernandes, Patrick D’Souza, Nina Fernandes, Eddie Sequeira (lead), Laveena D Souza, Sony Rodrigues and Jane Pinto.


The master of ceremonies for the cultural program was Eddie Sequeira and the formal stage program was conducted by Sony Rodrigues.


Richard D’Souza, President of MCC, in his welcome address touched on Love that binds us together – in Mary’s saying ‘yes’ to give the Eternal Bread to us and in Creator’s bringing salvation to mankind through her – we have more than one reasons to rejoice with the New Corn.
 
The chief guest for the evening was Dr. Edward Nazareth, MD. who flew in from Mangalore for this year’s nativity celebration. MCC is the first organization in the Middle East to invite Dr. Edward Nazareth, a well-known Orthopedic Consultant, and Professor at Fr. Muller’s Medical College, Kankanady, Mangalore, Noted Konkani Writer, Columnist, and Activist who amongst other things takes great pain in creating health awareness in the society, to be part of the club event. A "Maan Patr" highlighting the achievements of Dr. Edward Nazareth was read and presented by Vice President Sunil D’ Silva.


Three Good Samaritans Nery Alphonso, Richard Jurnis and Molly Pauly Mathew were honored by MCC for their efforts in rendering mortuary services to the deceased, irrespective of religion and nationality. Alfred Sequeira did the honors in introducing the trio.


The following Mangaloreans were felicitated for their outstanding achievements in various fields. Lerrel Pinto for being the topper in Grade 12 with 94.8% and A1 in all subjects (Science stream), Sana Britto and Ross Dias, toppers in Grade 10 with a CGPA of 9.4 and an A1 in three subjects and Dylan D’ Souza who represented Qatar in the World Youth Scrabble Championship in Malaysia in December 2009.


The 9th edition of the club’s newsletter ‘Sugandh’ edited by Joyce Alvares and designed graphically by Eddie Sequeira was released by the chief guest Dr Edward Nazareth.


Fr Anand Castelino, Assistant Parish Priest of Our Lady of Rosary church and Spiritual Director of Konkani Speaking Community was the guest of honor. In his key note address, Fr Anand requested and encouraged the audience to help the less fortunate and empathize with the ones in misery especially in the Hospitals. He blessed the Roce mixed with the blessed corn, which was then distributed to all present.


Cultural program consisted of songs, including Maando by Donny Lobo, dances and a comedy skit titled ‘Poillo Kumgaar’ (First Holy Communion) written, acted and directed by Vivian D’Souza. The other actors were Della Rego, Wilma Pinto, Riana Pinto, Roshan Pinto and Glylon Rodrigues. There was also a display of Karate by Cyril D’Souza and his troupe of ‘Karate Kids’


Trophies were distributed to the winners of the talent show competitions 2010.


The vote of thanks was proposed by the Sports Secretary Fredrick D’Souza. Bingo was conducted by Rita Andrade.


Earlier during the day, more than forty MCC volunteers gathered in the house of founder member Jerry and Leena D’Mello to prepare the sumptuous home cooked meal to be served during the Noven Jevan. The menu consisted of Alu dento, gosalem, poduvalem, sango, karethem, koromb, bendam, chonem, dhalicho saar, sanna, lonchem, sheeth and vorn. The entire cooking process was spearheaded by Ivy Rosario and the result was truly mouthwatering and appreciated by all.


The Executive Committee of Mangalore Cricket Club would like to express their sincere gratitude to all the volunteers, sponsors and members for contributing towards the success of the Noven Jevan.
